Description
worked with silk threads on a linen ground, depicting a twin handled vase issuing a carnation and flowers, with further motifs including candles, harebells, birds and trees, with the verse ‘Use honest endeavours and God will prosper them. Prayers without industry seldom prove effectual. Every man ought to use his best endeavours and do what he is able and under a humble dependence leave the issue to the divine being. But we must not lie down in a ditch and cry God help us and not strive to raise ourselves’, inscribed ‘Elizabeth Roberts finished this Dec 23rd 1784’ within a strawberry border, in a later frame; together with an EARLY VICTORIAN NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, DATED 1840, worked with silk threads on a linen ground, depicting a house below a twin handled urn issuing flowers, with the names ‘JOHN.MORISON.MARGARET.MORISON,AGNES.CAMPBELL / WILLIAM.CAMPBELL.JANET.MORISON. 51.XX.B.W.1840’, also worked with the alphabet, religious verses, further initials, and motifs including peacocks, birds and a crowned lady, all within a strawberry and leaf border, in a later giltwood frame (2)
