Footnote
This pattern was first published by John Ridgway in 1836. The scene is taken from part of a coloured lithograph by G. Scharf, dated 1836, which shows four giraffes destined for London Zoo. It is titled ‘The Giraffes with the Arabs who brought them over to this Country / Zoological Gardens / Regent's Park'. They were captured in the Sudan by M. Thibaut, a French trader, and they were bought to London via Malta in May 1836.
