Footnote
Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) painted ’The Cottage Door' circa 1780 and in the same year it was exhibited at The Royal Academy in London. The cottage door subject was a theme that he explored during the latter part of his of his life in several other paintings including ‘The Woodcutters Return’ (1772-1774), 'Hilly Landscape with Peasant Family at a Cottage Door, Children Playing and Woodcutter Returning' (1778) and ‘Peasant Smoking at Cottage Door’ (1788).
