George Fergusson, Lord Hermand (1742-1827) was a Scottish advocate and judge. He practised at the bar for thirty-four years and was a founder member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Alexander Handyside Ritchie (1804-1870) was born in Musselburgh and studied in Rome under Bertel Thorvaldsen, under sponsorship from the 5th Duke of Buccleuch. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1846.
