Provenance: Originally the property of General Sir Frederick William Traill-Burroughs KCB CMG (British 1831 – 1905) and formed part of the contents of Trumland House, Rousay, Orkney. The house was built and furnished for Sir Traill-Burroughs in 1873, taking up residence after his marriage. The house and selected contents, including this desk, were purchased by the current vendor in 1980. It is believed he had this desk on campaign at the Siege of Lucknow in 1857 and his later campaigns in India and the North West Frontier. The desk contained a number of items relating to him and also his father (General Frederick William Burroughs), including writing materials and sealings marked with family crests.
