Footnote
Provenance: Russian Works of Art from the Collection of The Late Jan Bethge Esq.
Note: The inventory number indicates that this pendant icon was one of the objects confiscated from the Moscow store by the CHEKA in 1919. We are grateful to Tatiana Fabergé and Valentin Skurlov for their assistance with the research on the present lot.
It is thought that this icon was most probably the the property of Father Gibbes, tutor of the Tsarevich, and bought (by him/for him) at auction, possibly in the 1920s.
