the rounded rectangular top with four leaf extensions, raised on twelve reeded tapered legs ending in brass caps and castors, the interior legs set back, bearing an engraved brass maker's plaque 'BUTLER'S PATENT NO 13 & 14 / CATHERINE ST. STRAND / LONDON'; the table extending to accommodate a possible two further leaf inserts, not present

Note: Thomas Butler specialised in the production of patent furniture, notably extending dining tables and bedsteads. Butler established his business in 1787, briefly employing Thomas Morgan and Joseph Sanders before they set up their own business in 1801 and became his greatest rivals. He traded from 1802-14 at 13 and 14 Catherine Street.
