Footnote
Note: See Thomas Chippendale's 'The Gentleman and Cabinetmakers Director', 1753 pl. LXXI, for a design for a library bookcase which relates directly to this lot. The execution of the 'Gothic' astragal glazed doors on the upper bookcase and general outline of the lower cupboards closely follow Chippendale's design, albeit with simplified moulded doors on the base. While the complete pediment and cornice is lacking on the present bookcase, it most likely would have had a broken arch pediment centred by the finial which still accompanies it, as seen on other designs in the 'Director'.
Provenance: Property from a Highland Estate.
