Description
a home service pattern blue cloth spiked helmet, with badge of eight pointed star of India surmounted by the Royal crown with St. Andrew holding a saltire 3rd F.R.V Dundee Highlanders surrounded by laurel leaves with its chain metal and leather backed chin strap, original tagger varnished conical tin hat box, the brass label engraved F. Tosh Esqr., Dundee Highlanders and a suppliers tag; a Scottish Regimental red cloth full dress officers doublet with silver braided sleeves and gilt collar badges of St. Andrew circa 1884-87 the epaulets with Lieutenants stars and Black Watch buttons, an undress jacket, red piped in white, with full set of silver buttons on cuffs, pockets and flaps (qty)

Note; Frederick Tosh was commissioned lieutenant in the 3rd Forfar Rifle Volunteers on 30th April 1884, by which time the battalion was already linked with The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) and had worn trews of Black Watch tartan and home service pattern blue cloth helmets since 1882. Frederick Tosh was promoted captain on 13th February 1886 and his battalion became 3rd (Dundee Highland) Volunteer Battalion, The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) on 1st December 1887, at which time it ceased to wear the helmet, replacing it with the glengarry cap, but retained the Black Watch tartan trews. Frederick Tosh retired in the Spring of 1894.
