A chair of related design was designed by Pugin for his project at Scarisbrick Hall in Lancashire for Charles Scarisbrick from 1836-1845. The base of this chair is of the same design as the stool offered here. It is a variation of a design published in Pugin's Gothic Furniture in the Style of the 15th Century (1835), based on late medieval examples illustrated in manuscripts, and represented a move away from the more 'decorative and fanciful' gothic of the Regency period to designs taken from source.
