The large clocks within the Tudric range comprise some of Knox’s most magnificent designs and chart the originality of his vision. The silhouette of standing stones or Celtic crosses against the Manx sky has been credited as providing the inspiration for the monumental stature of clock model no. 098 [LOT XXX]. Contemporaneously to designs apparently rooted in his Celtic upbringing however are examples so striking in their simplified, stark design that they speak to a dialogue with the Modernist Movement. [Lot XXX] incorporates square panels of inlaid abalone and a protracted form, exaggerated by the vertical panelling, which has seen parallels drawn with the work of Glasgow designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh. In 1903 Mackintosh was completing work on his famous Willow Tearooms, the interior of which included a monumental clock with repeating square pattern.
