Sir Hubert von Herkomer founded the Herkomer Art School at Bushey in 1883 and directed it until his retirement in 1904. The school taught more than 500 students, many of whom, including Lucy Kemp-Welch, Algernon Talmage and William Nicholson, went on to achieve distinction. Herkomer’s teaching had a wide influence on British art education, reflecting his own varied expertise in painting, drawing, etching, engraving and enamel work. His school provided practical training across different artistic disciplines and became an important centre for artists. After Herkomer’s retirement, Lucy Kemp-Welch continued the school’s work, developing it into a centre for animal painting.
