Winning the Design Centre Award in 1960, the Chelsea lighting fitting was seen as a new kind of decorative light due to the stark relationship between the sharp black metal and the thick coloured glass made by James Powell & Sons. The Design Journal described the light as “attractive whether the lamps are alight or not, and the effect is rich when the specially designed bulb throws light downwards into the hand-blown crystal glass, which can be clear, amber, pale rose or pale blue”.
