Footnote
Between 1863 and 1866, Edward Welby Pugin converted the remains of a medieval palace, once owned by the Archbishops of Canterbury, into Mayfield School of the Holy Child. One significant work from this time is a needlework carpet or runner that covered the entire Chapel floor. Due to its large size, the rug was made in small sections and then stitched together. It was hand-sewn by the sisters of Mayfield Chapel for Mother Cornelia Connelly, the founder of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus. Pugin likely used decorative designs created by his father, as he did in other projects.
