Footnote
Note:
The tutelary deity of Alexander the Great, Zeus-Ammon, was worshipped at the cult centre located in the Oasis of Siwa, nestled within the Libyan desert. It was at this sacred site that Alexander embarked on his pilgrimage in 331 B.C., seeking counsel from the god. The advice received was said to affirm his legitimacy as the ruler of Egypt and as a figure of divine authority. Henceforth, Alexander often referred to Zeus-Ammon as his true father and for centuries after his death currency was issued depicting him adorned with the Horns of Ammon.
The present piece was formerly part of the collection of the noted artist Sidney Nolan (1917-1992). Nolan is celebrated for his distinctive style and contributions to modern art. He gained international recognition for his series of paintings depicting the outlaw Ned Kelly, which reimagined Australian history in bold and abstract forms. Nolan's work often explored themes of identity, myth, and the Australian landscape, characterized by vivid colours and expressive brushstrokes. Throughout his career, he remained a leading figure in Australian art, leaving a lasting legacy as one of the country's most influential painters.
