Footnote
Note: Thomas Annan (1829-1887) worked first with the calotype and collodion process before buying in 1866 the rights to Swan's carbon process in Scotland. He was attracted to the carbon print process as it produced images that would not fade. His most lasting photographic project was Old Closes and Streets of Glasgow, published between 1868 and 1877, a series of views of the slum areas of Glasgow produced for the Glasgow City Improvement Trust which recorded not only the housing conditions but also vividly portrayed the inhabitants of Glasgow's poorest quarters.
