Note: A barber by trade John Kay drew and later etched portraits of all the leading Scottish figures of his day from the economist Adam Smith and political revolutionary John Paine to well known local figures such as "Mortar Willie", aged 107, and Colonel Monro, a well known Edinburgh beggar. Plate 242 is an early etching of the game of golf, played by Alexander M'Kellar "or The Cock o' the Green".
