Provenance: Ink inscription on rear of frame reads "This photograph was sent to me by Sir Winston Churchill in 1950 when he was invited to attend a reunion dinner of the Scottish Returned Far East POW Asociation of which I was chairman. [signed] J. Telfer Dunbar". Pasted alongside the inscription is a letter from Mr. Churchill's secretary, dated 26th January 1951, sending apologies for not being able to accept the dinner invitation.
