Scarce in commerce; an early account of India by an English observer, published in the year of the Battle of Plassey. The author, brother of the antiquary Francis Grose, travelled to India in the service of the East India Company in 1749, before returning home through illness a few years later and publishing the present work. It 'describes his outward voyage, Bombay and its governance by the East India Company, Surat, the recent history of the Mughal empire, local religions and the progress of the Catholic missions, and a miscellany of social practices. The French translation of 1758 stated that he had been helped by the observations of ‘M. Cl.’—possibly John Cleland, who, having served at Bombay in 1728-40, edited notes which Grose had made' (ODNB).
