First edition, 2 volumes, 4to, original orange buckram, gilt title to spines, fore and bottom edges untrimmed, 37 photogravure plates by Emery Walker (including frontispieces), 8 fold-out maps, 1 further map, with the dust jackets (with nicks to edges, versos with strip of adhesive-staining from old tape-reinforcement, no longer present, that of volume 2 with short tear to corner of front panel) (2)
Provenance
Wilfred Merton FSA (1888-1957), noted collector of books and manuscripts, with his book-labels dated 1941, and his laid-in manuscript catalogue description stating that this copy was ‘presented in compliance with the author’s wish by his executors and received from the Oxford University Press on the 26th February 1941'.
Footnote
A very good copy of this attractively produced work, uncommon in the dust jackets. Written as a retrospective account during the last years of the author's life, and eventually published posthumously, it describes travels across what are now Georgia, Azerbaijan and the Russian republics of the North Caucasus during the final years of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th.
