Description
Manchester: published by Thos. Agnew & Sons, [1853]. First edition, elephant folio (61.2 x 44.6cm), green quarter morocco, original publisher's green moiré cloth boards, tinted lithograph title-page and 24 full page tinted lithograph plates, 23 by William Gauci after paintings by J.B. Pyne (1 plate ‘Windermere’ printed in colour by Louis Haghe), interspersed with letterpress text, spine torn and worn, gutta percha perished and all contents loose, endpapers creased, some spotting to introductory text and soiling (mostly confined to margins), some fraying and tears to fore margins

James Baker Pyne was a prolific landscape artist associated with the Bristol School of Artists in the early years of his career. He was commissioned by the art dealership Thomas Agnew and Sons to paint in the Lake District in 1848, resulting in this volume of lithographs, with text by Charles Swain, and The Lake Scenery of England in 1859.
