First edition, atlas folio (66.5 x 51.7cm), 19th-century marbled paper boards with manuscript label pasted on front board ‘École de cavalerie, militaire, française,’ volume of plates published (without title-page) to accompany the text of Drummond de Melfort's treatise on cavalry tactics, 32 double-page engravings by various artists most after Louis-Nicolas van Blarenberghe (1 folding), lacking plate 2, with 2 additional, unnumbered, plates, spine rolled and worn with tail missing, boards scuffed, corner tips worn, plates creased, lightly dust-soiled, plates 1-15 with light dampstaining, plate 1 torn and creased along central fold, 1 unnumbered plate torn with loss of paper in lower margin but engraving unaffected

A member of the Melfort branch of the Drummond family, prominent Jacobites who had gone into exile in France in 1688, Louis-Hector Comte Drummond de Melfort studied cavalry tactics in Prussia and served in the Jacobite Royal Scots (Royal-Ecossais regiment) during the Seven Years' War. His final years were spent as a Lieutenant-General of Louis XVI's army.
