… Reprinted from the Originals by the Desire of his Widow. Edited and Revised by his Nephew, Robert G. Wardlaw Ramsay, Together with a Biographical Sketch of the Author by William Howard Russell. For private circulation. London: printed by Taylor and Francis, 1881. First edition, 4to (31.5 x 34.3cm), half-title, photographic portrait frontispiece, coloured map, 11 hand-coloured lithographic plates by J. Smit, and several black and white engraved illustrations, contemporary quarter morocco over cloth boards, raised bands, spine tooled in gilt, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, cloth on upper board sunned, spine and edges rubbed, corners bumped, minor spotting to initial and end leaves, but otherwise internally clean [Anker 513; Nissen IVB 419; Wood p. 605]

Presentation copy, inscribed ‘Sir Charles Russell, with Lady Tweeddale’s regards, August 16th, 1881' on the half-title, the recipient being Sir Charles Russell, 3rd Baronet VC (22nd June 1826 – 13th April 1883), a British Conservative politician and soldier; bookplate of ‘C .W. Clementine 1901’ on front pastedown, i.e. Lady Clementine Waring née Hay (1879-1964), daughter of the 10th Marquess of Tweeddale.

Contains the full complement of 11 plates called for in the section 'The Philippine Archipelago,' originally published in the Transactions of the Zoological Society of London. Copies are also recorded with no coloured plates (Wood) or 22 (Anker and Nissen). Hay wrote mainly on the birds of south-east Asia, other sections cover Celebes (Sulawesi), Negros Island, Mindanao, and elsewhere.
