First edition, trade issue, 4to, original blue cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, covers panelled in gilt with arabesque corner- and centrepieces (centrepiece to front cover on red ground), all edges gilt, xv 543 pp., photogravure portrait frontispieces of George V and Queen Mary, text within decorative gilt borders, halftone photographic portraits of Indian rulers throughout (full-page and vignettes), with the publisher's patterned cloth slipcase, publisher's prospectus laid in, bookplate to rear pastedown, spine toned, a little wear to slipcase

This copy is accompanied by an original telegram to the Earl of Carnwath, dated 1922 and signed from the ‘Viceroy’, who at the time was the Marquess of Reading, declining Carnwath's proposed joint dedication of the work to him (Reading) in addition to Lord Chelmsford: ‘As the services rendered by India and recorded in your work were mostly completed during Lord Chemlsford's regime and before I took charge of this high office it would perhaps be more fitting that your work should be dedicated to Lord Chelmsford in view of the arduous war responsibilities which he so ably carried out in this country’.
