Description
3 volumes, folio (41.5 x 27.5cm), 19th-/early 20th-century half maroon morocco gilt, with pink patterned endpapers, gilt edges, consisting of:
2 volumes of 120 steel-engraved plates by various artists and engravers, mounted on large paper and interleaved with tissue paper, proofs before letters for the 12-volume Abbotsford edition of Scott's Waverley published by Robert Cadell between 1842-1847, with manuscript index of the plates to front of each volume, pencil captions to each plate;
one volume consisting of a complete set of 67 steel-engraved plates after Turner, used as illustrations for Scott's prose (1834-6) and poetical works (1833-4), and india proof impressions of two engraved portraits (Scott and J.G. Lockhart) used in editions of Lockhart's ‘Memoirs of the Life of Sir Walter Scott’, interleaved with tissue paper;
with bookplates of bibliophiles and collectors William Cowan (1851-1929), R.W. Lloyd (1868-1958), and Eric S. Quayle (1921-2001) (3)
