Description
London, 10 Downing Street, 3rd January 1945. Single sheet of Churchill's 10 Downing Street stationery, 24 x 18.8cm, with Churchill's embossed prime ministerial crest and address to upper left and right respectively, the letter reading ‘Sir, I accept with gratitude the two letters of Lord Nelson … I would even suggest that, when the next anniversary of Tragalgar is reached in October of this year, I should make them public, together with your kind letter and this reply’, addressed to Walter E. Tower, signed by Churchill in black ink, ‘yours faithfully, Winston S. Churchill’, old folds, punch-hole upper left, retaining original envelope.
Together with related correspondence, comprising: draft letter from Walter Tower to the Lord Mayor of London, 1916, enclosing copies of two letters by Nelson and comparing the City of London's recent recognition of Admiral Jellicoe with the ‘want of commendation’ shown to Nelson after the Battle of Copenhagen; Tower's manuscript copy of one of the letters ('My Lord, I have seen in this days news papers that the Court of Common Council have voted their thanks …', 20th November 1801); a response from the office of the Lord Mayor; and a letter to Tower from Geoffrey Callender, director of the National Maritime Museum, 1941
