Description
Edinburgh: for the author, and sold by William Creech, 1787. First Edinburgh edition (second overall), one of 3,000 copies, 8vo (20.5 x 12.4cm), later sprinkled tan calf to style, smooth spine ruled and decorated in gilt, morocco label, xlviii [9]-368 pp., with the half-title, engraved portrait frontispiece after Nasmyth, the text with misprints ‘Boxburgh’ on p. xxxvii and ‘stinking’ on p. 263, variable spotting and soiling, frontispiece offset onto title-page, restored loss to upper outer corner of title-page (presumably after the excision of an ownership inscription), small tears in O4 affecting a line of text either side and gutter of 2O4 not affecting text [Egerer 2; ESTC T125274; Rothschild 556]
