4to (19.7 x 15.9cm), contemporary sheep-backed boards, [96] leaves, unpaginated, 20 lines to the page, list of contents to verso of front free endpaper, caption-title ‘Of Moral Philosophy’ to first page of main text, the list of contents dividing the work into two parts of two and four chapters respectively (Part I covering ‘Intellectual Science’, Part II ‘Moral Science’, the latter including chapters on ethics, jurisprudence and politics, the chapter on politics containing sections headed ‘Origin of Society and of Language', ‘Progress of Arts and Commerce’, ‘Population and Finance’, and ‘Government’), Mackenzie's ownership inscriptions to front and rear free endpapers (the latter reading ‘George Mackenzie, Student, Magistrand Class Kings College, Aberdeen, A.D. 1807')
