[Beilby, Ralph]. History of British birds. The figures engraved on wood by T. Bewick. Volume 1. Newcastle: printed by Sol. Hodgson, for Beilby & Bewick, 1797. First edition, later issue (the advertisement on final leaf is for the fourth edition of 'Quadrupeds' rather than the third), 8vo (20.6 x 12cm), [5],iv-xxx,335 p., wood-engraved vignette to title and numerous vignette illustrations by Bewick throughout, with the ‘coarse’ vignette on p. 285 which was later suppressed, half-title bound after p. xxxx, contemporary mottled calf, lower board cracking but firm, minor spotting on endpapers but internally clean, bookplate of English artist Joseph Crawhall (1861-1913) on front pastedown [ESTC N511577];

Bewick, 1800. 8vo (23 x 13.9cm), x,525p., wood-engraved vignette to title and numerous vignette illustrations by Bewick throughout, the main animal illustrations have been hand-coloured, contemporary mottled calf, with gilt borders on boards and gilt tooling with animal designs on spine, marbled endpapers, binding scuffed, some spotting and staining to endpapers but internally clean, with bookplate on front free paper of the Earl of Altamont, Jesus College, Cambridge (Howe Browne (1788-1845), later 2nd Marquess of Sligo, with pencil annotation on p. 197 making joke about Lady Sligo, presumably his mother, Catherine, Marchioness of Sligo) [ESTC T61241];
