Description
Oblong folio album (30 x 27cm), maroon half skiver binding, containing 50 albumen print photographs (most between approx. 18 x 21cm and 22 x 28cm., a few smaller, 14 x 10cm), mounted to rectos and versos of linen-hinges stiff card leaves with gilt edges, contemporary manuscript captions to mounts (often dated), the photographs including ethnographic studies ('A Toda hut near Ootacamund’; ‘A Toda man’ and ‘A Toda woman’, these oval-form, 23.5 x 18.5cm; ‘A Native priest’; ‘A Coolie woman;’ ‘Maskers during the Mohurrum’; ‘A Chatty shop’; ‘Dirzies’; ‘Grinding gram’ ‘Snake charmers and jugglers’, etc.), ‘The Maharaja of Mysore and his Relatives’, ‘Palace of the Maharajah on his wedding day June 1878’, street scenes (‘A wayside scene, Kullar’; ‘St James’ Bazaar Secunderabad'), Indian architecture ('Mool Ali'; ‘The Fort Golconda’; ‘Tomb at Golconda’), British military, civil and landscape architecture ('The Entrenchment, Trimulgherry'; ‘The “Kirk” Secunderabad’; ‘The Lal Bagh Bangalore, 1878’), British recreation (including several scenes of the Secunderabad hunt, with native attendants, and portraits of social groups, e.g. ‘A picnic group Coonoor, 1877’), views (including several of Coonoor), British soldiers (parades and group portraits, e.g. ‘Officers R.A. Secunderabad Feby 1878’), with a few additional studio photographs of Suez and Ismailia to front and rear, spine worn, front board partly detached.
Together with 2 related photograph albums (oblong 4to maroon half skiver album containing approx. 30 albumen print photographs of Royal Artillery ordnance and exercises, at Shoeburyness and possibly elsewhere, captions dated 1870s; and an oblong folio album also of Royal Artillery content, 1880s-c.1900, including formal group portraits of RA officers at Malta, personal snapshot photographs of service in South Africa in the Second Boer War, etc.)
