From the first picture book clutched in small hands to the stories that sparked a lifelong love of reading, children’s literature occupies a unique and treasured place in our cultural memory. 

Following the success of <a href="/auctions/books-and-manuscripts-878">The Library of James Stirling, Mathematician</a> in October 2025, which achieved a total of £820,000 with 94% of lots sold, Lyon &amp; Turnbull are pleased to invite consignments for our upcoming Books &amp; Manuscripts sale. &nbsp;Collections already consigned include The Library of Scottish Army Officer General Sir James Edward Alexander (1803-1885), containing his archive of sketchbooks documenting his travels in India, New Zealand, Canada and Africa, and his personal copies of his published travel accounts. Later in life Alexander was the prime mover in the campaign to bring Cleopatra’s Needle to Britain, and his library is offered by Lyon &amp; Turnbull on behalf of Alexander’s direct descendants.&nbsp; The sale is also strong in private press material, modern first editions, children’s books, and important historical documents, with highlights including a first edition, first impression, hardback issue of <a href="/artists/jk-rowling">J.K. Rowling's</a> Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and important letters signed by the 15th-century monarch Edward IV and the privy council of the ill-fated Lady Jane Grey.
