Description
Large 4to (29.1 x 22cm), green morocco gilt, with brass locking clasp (without key), Victorian photograph album with 20 double-sided thick card leaves, gilt edges and window spaces for 8 standard-size cartes-de-visite (11.4 x 6.3cm) on each leaf (4 recto and 4 verso), containing c.60 albumen print cartes-de-visite (6 leaves do not contain any photographs), first 10 leaves contain cartes-de-visite from mainly British (mostly London) studios, notably portraits of British politicians, leading lawyers, members of the aristocracy, and various celebrities including: William Ewart Gladstone, John Ruskin, Charles Dickens, Thomas Carlyle, Alfred Tennyson, William Makepeace Thackeray, George MacDonald, Michael Faraday, David Livingstone, Henry Irving, as well as photographs of paintings (including portraits of Sir Walter Scott, Robert Burns, Mary Queen of Scots), the final 4 leaves contain photographs mainly from Continental studios (mostly from Paris), moiré fabric pastedowns, binding worn and scuffed, a few of the albumen prints have surface damage.
