Auction: Other Properties | Wed 25 February from 10am | Lots 63 to 255
Description
to Bernard Piffard (1833-1916), amateur entomologist, botanist, chemist and microscopic slide-maker, ‘... Your memory with us is kept alive by occasional news of you given to us by Dr or Mrs Knaggs … I still go on with the study of coleoptera & shall be very glad of the quill of Texan specimens’, single bifolium written on 2 sides, 17.6 x 11cm, retaining original envelope
Footnote
A rare autograph letter from the author of The Naturalist on the River Amazons (1863) to a fellow entomologist believed to have visited him in South America. The Dr Knaggs mentioned is Henry Guard Knaggs, another entomologist. Bates' development of the theory of Batesian mimicry from his examination of butterfly specimens provided strong contemporary evidence for Darwin's theory of natural selection.
