addressed to a Mr Peter Hancock, expounding the ideas, structure, characters and meaning of Banks's second published novel Walking on Glass ('You've got problems working the book out; so have I, and I wrote the damn thing!'), referring also to The Wasp Factory ('that was a much simpler book … it is all told on one level of reality; everything happens in the real world, with no magic involved'), and his recently published novel The Bridge ('I hope it's a bit easier to understand'), word-processed, 2 leaves of A4 paper with text on 3 sides, signed by Banks at foot of second leaf in black ink, retaining part of original envelope
