Around 150 letters written and signed by the Earl of Breadalbane to his solicitor, Harry Davidson, Esq., Writer to the Signet, of Charlotte Street, Edinburgh, sent from Taymouth Castle and a residence in London, discussing legal, property and financial matters, alongside opinion, for example: “The clergy of late are too apt to litigate with their ? I by no means feel sorry therefore that the Minister should be cast, on this occasion…” [London, September 19th 1823], and discussing daily personal issues, such as being sent a pony that “is by no means the description I gave of what I wanted” not being a “Trophy pony” (c.150)
Lieutenant John Campbell was the 1st Marquess of Breadalbane, known simply as John Campbell until 1782 and the Earl of Breadalbane and Holland from 1782, when he inherited the title from his distant kinsman, John Campbell, 3rd Earl of Breadalbane and Holland. In 1806 he was also created Baron Breadalbane of Taymouth Castle, where he resided and where many of these letters are sent from.
