CRAIG [James]
Craig's plan for the New Town of Edinburgh

Auction: 8 July 2003 at 12:00 BST
Description
... Published according to Parliament, Jan. 1st 1768 ... 50 x 67 cms. Framed in Hogarth. Cartouche, Royal Arms, etc. had washed in colour. Part of right hand plate marked possibly trimed.
Note: "What makes Craig's New Town so pleasing ... even today? It cannot be the originality of its design. Craig was not original ... The principal reason for Craig's success ... is the excellent use of the site. The two outer streets - Princess Street and Queen Street - have houses on one side only, and these look outwards across the street, in the one case over low ground towards the Castle and High Street, in the other down the slope towards the Firth of Forth and the distant hills of Fife. This seeking of spaciousness combined with order is no doubt enhanced by the good proportion of the streets and buildings." - Youngson The making of classical Edinburgh p. 79
