Provenance
The ‘Man on Horseback Leading a Dappled Mare’ painting was acquired by Sir James Stewart Lockhart (1858-1937); The ‘Return of Cai Yan from the Turkic Tribes to China’ handscroll was a gift to Sir James Stewart Lockhart (1858-1937) from Sir George Sinclair Moss (1882-1959) when District Officer in Weihaiwei, Christmas 1913 (Sir James Stewart Lockhart, Notebook, dated 1910-1921, p. 17, NLS Acc. 12695/26c);
Both gifted to his daughter, Mary Stewart Lockhart (1894-1985);
Presented by the above to George Watson’s College, Edinburgh in 1967;
Lent to the National Museums of Scotland, Edinburgh (2003-2025).
