Footnote
According to the Manuscripts of Biographical Records from the Qing Imperial Historiography Office in the National Palace Museum, Taipei (國立故宮博物院清國史館傳稿), no. 701000657, Derengge was the Uliastai General or General of Uliastai, formerly known as Deputy General of the Left, was the highest military officer of China's Qing dynasty in Outer Mongolia, Tannu Uriankhai and Kobdo in the 20th of the Daoguang reign year, corresponding to 1840AD.
The set of eight semi-cursive script calligraphies is a poetic description praising Wang Xizhi, the famed calligrapher of the Eastern Jin, also known as Wang Youjun, and can be translated as follows: ‘Wang Youjun, the force of his brush was like a dragon leaping into the heavens, a tiger crouching at the gate, a phoenix resting in the pavilion. Thus, throughout the ages, his art has been treasured as the supreme model of instruction.’
