渡辺環水 銅猿猴置物
realistically modelled, the primate sits on a rock and turns to his right in an inquisitive manner, the artist's mark impressed on the lower back of the plinth, further with a two-character ‘Kansui’ mark on the base

Footnote
The bronze is modelled after the famous wood carving entitled 'Aged Monkey' by Buddhist sculptor Takamura Koun. The original is over a meter tall and was displayed at the Chicago World Fair in 1893, where it won the Outstanding Performance Award. It is on display today at the Tokyo National Museum.
