*** Captain Peter Cameron (1777-1843), was the third son of Sir Ewen Cameron , second Chief of Fassifern in Invernesshire. After leaving Aberdeen University he entered service with the East India Company and his first recorded voyage was as 4th Officer on the "Ceres", (see log-book above) at the age of 22 under Captain Stevens, rising to Captain of the "Ann" (1810), as First Mate aboard the "Earl of Balcarras" under Captain Jamieson (1816) and finally as Commander of the "Earl of Balcarras" on its fourth voyage. He retired in May 1827 at the age of 50 and went to reside at Blackheath with Samuel granger and eventually becoming Captain of the Blackheath Golf Club. He died at his home at 6 Eliot Place on 4th October 1843 aged 66. An obelisk to the memory of Captain Peter Cameron is to be found in Fort William.
