William Mervyn Glass was a Scottish painter celebrated for his gentle, painterly touch and a refined use of soft, harmonious colour. Born in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, he spent the greater part of his life in Edinburgh, where he developed a quietly distinctive artistic voice.
Glass trained at Gray’s School of Art and the Royal Scottish Academy Life School, further enriching his studies in Paris and Italy before his service in the First World War. His work was deeply inspired by the atmospheric seascapes of Iona, where he painted alongside notable contemporaries including John McLaughlan Milne, Francis Cadell, and Samuel Peploe.
