Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe is widely regarded as one of Sweden’s most influential 20th-century artists, known for her groundbreaking contributions to modernist jewellery design. Her creations, characterised by organic shapes, fluid lines, and minimalistic elegance, have left a lasting impact on the world of contemporary jewellery.
Born into an artistic family, Torun developed a passion for design and craftsmanship from a young age. She began creating jewellery as a teenager, experimenting with unconventional materials and forms. Determined to refine her skills, she attended Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, where she honed her expertise in silversmithing.
Torun became the first female silversmith in Sweden to have her own workshop which was a groundbreaking achievement in a field historically dominated by men. In 1967, Torun began collaborating with Georg Jensen, the renowned Danish silversmith and design house. The Torun Bangle Watch, which is now an icon of the Georg Jensen design house, was first launched in 1969. More than just a timepiece, it was designed as a statement about time and presence, embodying Torun’s philosophy that “now is the moment”. Her first designs had simply a second hand and a mirrored back, to remind the wearer
that now is the moment. When Georg Jensen put the watch into production, the hour and minute hands were added.
Torun’s work continues to inspire designers worldwide. She redefined the essence of jewellery by emphasising simplicity, movement, and the harmony between form and function. Many of her designs, including the Torun watch, remain part of Georg Jensen’s permanent collection.
