Tony Swain (b.1967 Lisburn) trained at Glasgow School of Art and Liverpool School of Art. His practice combines painting with newsprint, bringing together imagination with physical fact, based on a daily ritual of reading a newspaper and keeping it in his studio.
Solo exhibitions include Dilemma To Rely On, Gallery Baton, Seoul (2024) and Temperature is here too, Tate Britain, London (2009), as well as many mounted at The Modern Institute, Glasgow (2004, 2006, 2011, 2015, 2017, 2022). Group exhibitions include Innovative Printmaking, Glasgow Print Studio (2018) and NOW, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh (2017).
Swain’s work is held in public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh and Tate. He was one of six artists who represented Scotland at the 52nd Venice Biennale (2007). Swain lives and works in Glasgow.
