Mary Restieaux is a textile designer, weaver and dyer whose practice spans both commercial collaborations and fine art.
Working primarily with ikat, an ancient resist-dyeing technique in which threads are bound and dyed prior to weaving, her textiles are distinguished by their rich colour, rhythmic pattern and sense of fluid movement.
Following completion of her MA at the Royal College of Art in 1974, Restieaux established a studio in South East London, where she continues to work on a traditional handloom, producing designs for both fashion and interiors. A member of the First Eleven Studio, she also worked for many years as a colourist for the Paris-based designer Hervé Léger.
Restieaux’s work has been exhibited internationally and is held in major public collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The mulberry frames accompanying her textiles were made by Toshio Shimazaki in Japan.
