Why Was This Copy So Special?
The original hardback edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was famously printed in just 500 copies.
Around 300 were sent directly to libraries and schools, where they were read, borrowed and well loved. Of the remaining copies released commercially, only a small number survive in exceptional condition today.
This particular example stood apart for several reasons. It was preserved in fine condition and carried a personal inscription from J.K. Rowling:
"For James, Kate and Laura, with best wishes, J.K. Rowling, 6.9.97."
Written less than three months after publication, the inscription dates from a time when Rowling was still largely unknown, adding an extra layer of rarity and historical significance.
International Interest
Collectors from around the world competed for the book during our Books & Manuscripts auction, with bidding taking place live online, by telephone, through absentee bids and across multiple international bidding platforms.
The strength of competition reflected the continued global demand for exceptional Harry Potter material, particularly copies combining first impression status, excellent condition and early author inscriptions. As Head of Books & Manuscripts Cathy Tait explains:
"We were delighted to have the opportunity to handle this iconic volume here in Edinburgh, a beautiful copy of a very rare book made even more special by J.K. Rowling's inscription. The huge levels of interest it received from around the world shows Harry Potter remains a global superstar."
