There are a few pieces of advice which have stuck in my head over the years. I remember being a student studying Classics and my Head of School once told me, “You don’t become a classicist to study classics, you become one to be entertaining at cocktail parties!”
But in all honestly, when it comes to working with fine jewellery at auction, it is such a privilege to do what we do. Working with fine jewellery is a very personal as they are such intimate objects. Each piece can mean a huge amount to someone, whether it was your great grandmother’s engagement ring, or a bracelet bought with one’s first ever bonus. Jewellery always has a story, even if it’s a chapter yet to be written.
One mantra which I’ve always tried to live by in my professional life is to treat each object as if it was my own. Take the time to make sure each object is presented in the best possible light, take no shortcuts, and give it the respect it deserves. Sometimes that means arranging for professional repair or cleaning, or independent laboratory testing, always ensuring that it’s accurately and fully researched and catalogued. Then making sure the photography is spot on to show it at its best, and ensuring that its presentation in the viewings is enticing to connect with potential bidders. Each detail needs to be carefully considered so that every item is seen at its optimal.
Every single piece of jewellery sold at auction is unique and special. I’m so grateful for all the clients who entrusts their objects with us and I will always want to ensure I’m doing the best for them and the jewels.
