Lyon & Turnbull is delighted to be offering 100 lots of Art Nouveau glass as part of the DESIGN Since 1860 sale taking place in Edinburgh and online, on 16 & 17 October.
It is impossible to talk about the Art Nouveau movement without mentioning glass. The versatility of the medium lent itself to being worked hot or cold and in a wide variety of techniques and it was therefore a perfect vehicle for expressing both creativity and meaning.
Some of the techniques employed had only recently been rediscovered, such as enamelling inspired by medieval Islamic work, while Roman glass stimulated a rejuvenation of interest in iridescent surface finishes.
New methods too were pioneered by the likes of Henri Cros in the 1880s and his pâte de verre (glass paste). Cameo glass was taken to a new level as the connections between nature and symbolism were explored with a new range of colours being available.
