This January, we are delighted to present Untitled (Monkey), 2006-2008, a significant strand within Andrew Cranston's oeuvre, in our 22 January Contemporary Art auction.
Andrew Cranston was born in Hawick, Scotland in 1969. He studied Fine Art at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen, before completing an M.A. in Painting at the Royal College of Art, London, where Peter Doig and Adrian Berg (1929–2011) were his tutors. Today Cranston works from his Glasgow studio.
One of Scotland’s foremost contemporary painters, Cranston was awarded the Arts Foundation Fellowship by the Royal Scottish Academy in 2014. He has held numerous solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally, including a recent major solo show ‘What made you stop here?’ at the Hepworth Wakefield in 2023-2024. The first public gallery exhibition of the Scottish painter’s work, the Hepworth Wakefield show featured paintings that ranged from large-scale canvases to intimate works painted on old linen-bound book covers.
Untitled (Monkey), 2006-2008 offered in this January's auction is from a significant strand within Cranston's oeuvre, created by painting, lacquering, layering and collaging over a ‘found’ book cover base. His work is subtle and gently narrative, recalling the world-making intimacy of Vuillard and Bonnard.
