It was thrilling in April to offer a private collection of Lalique car mascots. Assembled over a number of years, the collection included all 29 models and exampes in the various known colour-ways too. It is so rare to find all the mascots bring offered together and an area of the market which appeals to both Lalique collectors and to automobilia enthusiasts.
It is not surprising that the top lots of the sale proved to be the rarest and most elusive designs – the Renard (28), Hibou (6), Comete (45) and Tête de Paon in turquoise (40). This was a celebration of post-war hope and the golden age of the motor car. The forms are elegant and communicate drama, movement and speed and are all about glamour and elegance. Car mascots were not necessary, but they were great symbols of status and prowess.
René Lalique’s car mascots wonderfully embody the golden age of the motor car – a period of time when travel was all about luxury, glamour and elegance.
Besides the car mascots collection, the Lalique sale also included some great vases and amongst the highest prices were for the monumental Palestre (88) and the beautiful Aras vase in deep amber with its detailed design (134).
Many countries participated in the sale with the strongest buyers coming from UK, US, France and Canada. They were mainly active on L & T live and on the telephones, but it was also good to see more people appearing in the room again. The auction comprised 140 lots and 91% of these were sold.
We are now preparing from the next Lalique sale which will take place on 27 October in the Mall Galleries, London. It promises to be a sale of varied content that includes some unusual and less common pieces.
Lyon & Turnbull’s Design Department is delighted to have introduced Lalique as a new biannual sale category in April 2021. No other auction house offers specialist sales devoted entirely to the work of René Lalique.
Senior Specialist, Joy McCall heads these sales as she previously did at Christie’s, London for many years. She has over 25 years of experience selling Lalique and brings to the process her knowledge and expertise together with a personal passion for the subject.
