A Talk by Alice Strang for the Moray Feu Bicentenary

Join Senior Specialist Alice Strang on Thursday 13 October 2022 at our Edinburgh HQ at Broughton Place  for 'A Scottish Colourist in our Midst: F. C. B. Cadell', a talk sponsored by Lyon & Turnbull, as part of the events programme to celebrate the ‘Moray Feu’ bicentenary.

The Scottish Colourist F. C. B. Cadell (1883-1937) lived for much of his life in Ainslie Place in Edinburgh’s New Town. It is one of thirteen streets which, along with four gardens, make up the ‘Moray Feu’, established in 1822. As part of the events programme to celebrate its bicentenary, Senior Specialist Alice Strang will give the talk 'A Scottish Colourist in our Midst: F. C. B. Cadell' on 13 October 2022.

Cadell is one of the four Scottish Colourists, along with J. D. Fergusson, G. L. Hunter and S. J. Peploe, who are Scotland's most celebrated twentieth-century artists. He is renowned for his depictions of the elegant New Town interiors of his native Edinburgh, for portraits and for his work made on the Isle of Iona. He grew up at 22 Ainslie Place and as an adult lived at 6 Ainslie Place between 1920 and 1931. Cadell painted the front door of number six bright blue to annoy his neighbours and took great trouble over the stylish decoration of its interiors. His home became the subject matter and setting for a remarkable series of pictures created during the 1920s.

Alice joined Lyon & Turnbull last year, having formerly been a Senior Curator at the National Galleries of Scotland. Whilst there, she curated the F. C. B. Cadell retrospective exhibition and wrote its accompanying publication. In this talk she will discuss Cadell's personal and professional links with the Moray Feu, including its architecture and residents.
